Company profile

Shires Developments Limited was inaugurated in 1994 by a group of professionals in the minerals industry, focussing on brownfield sites where the underlying mineral assets, primarily coal, would be won with the sites reclaimed for productive use.  Large greenfield sites were controversial yet the expertise usually required to develop an opencast coal site would normally only be found in larger companies and the financial return required in turn necessitated a large site.  The collective expertise of the founders thus allowed the development of a niche market.

The successful development and working of the company’s first site, at Turnoaks Lane, Chesterfield, now the home of Caterpillar dealer Finning’s North Midlands site, has led to the development of the company with a wider perspective.  The company has worked on a number of schemes in North Wales, Staffordshire, Derbyshire, South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, Lancashire and Nottinghamshire.  These vary from sites where the company has purchased land or obtained working rights agreements to quarries and other land operated by third parties where agreements have been made for the winning of coal or other minerals.  The company has also traded minerals from other sites.

Today the company has a considerable plant portfolio and established supply chains.  The business includes plant hire, inert landfill, contracting and supply of minerals on an ongoing basis.  Other minerals, such as clay and sand and gravel, are available to the wider market outside established customers
